Day 1 Arrival in Malmö
Spend your first day in Sweden's third biggest city Malmö. A lot of things have
happened during the last ten years and Malmö has become a very international city. This is expressed by the fact that Malmö has 270 000 residents who speak some 100 languages and belong to 164 different
nationalities! Malmö is also strongly orientated towards the European continent and is in the process of developing very close ties with the Danish capital. The Öresund bridge makes it an easy task to
travel between the two cities. In Malmö, we do recommend a visit to the Malmö Art Museum.
Day 2 Malmö-Ystad-Simrishamn-Kristianstad (170 km)
After you have picked up your car downtown Malmö or had it delivered to your
hotel, we recommend that you go south to the city of Ystad. Mystery hangs heavy in the air above the Ale's Stones and nobody really knows why the 59 stones were placed here a thousand years ago.
Millions of readers have also read about mystery in Ystad and Inspector Kurt Wallander of Ystad police in the series of detective novels by Henning Mankell. Kenneth Branagh played Inspector Wallander in
three films made by the BBC. Marhbé Travel with provide you with a guide to all the well-known addresses!
Pastel-coloured houses will meet you atSimrishamn, a small town with 6
000 inhabitants. This part of Sweden, Österlen, is a tranquil corner that offers a sense of limitless space. Fishing built Simrishamn and this is a perfect stop to have lunch.
Despite the fact that Kristianstad was Danish for only 44 years in the 17th century, the city's Danishness is still tangible and Christian IV continues to make his presence felt in many ways. Have a stroll through the central areas and discover the charms of ”Sweden's most Danish city”.
Day 3 Kristianstad-Växjö (142 km)
In the area around Växjö, world famous glass is produced in the 15 glassworks
that make up theKingdom of Crystal. The small area in the counties of Kronoberg and Kalmar in Småland receives over a million visitors each year. It is a very interesting experience to admire the
spectacle of red-hot molten glass being transformed into fragile crystal or robust bowls. Whether you are looking for everyday glassware or colourful works of art, we will plan this day together
according to your personal interests!
Day 4 Växjö-Kalmar (109 km)
Kalmar
was once one of the most important towns in Sweden. Kalmar Castle, the Old Town and Kvarnholmen all tell the tale of kings and queens as well as commoners. You will find traces of the past in architecture and in the well-worn cobblestones that pave the streets!
Why not drive a bit further today and visit the island of Öland, via the
Öland bridge? Öland is a long and narrow island in the Baltic with endless flat plains and long white beaches. A visit in the autumn will prove how beautiful nature is in this part of Sweden, and you
will enjoy the calm of the countryside. In the south of Öland, you will find the limestone plateau Alvaret, a Unesco world heritage. The Långe Erik lighthouse and the Ottenby bird station are popular
among ornothologists.
Day 5 Kalmar-Vimmerby (137 km)
Every evening, children all over the world listen to Astrid Lindgren's tales.
Today, at Astrid Lindgren's World at Vimmerby, you can join many of her characters: Pippi Longstocking in Villekulla Cottage, Emil on the farm at Katthult or the brothers Lionheart in Nangijala's Cherry
Tree Valley. Open all summer and during weekends in September and October. Should you travel without children or out of season, we suggest that you go spend another night at Kalmar or travel directly to
Göteborg.
Day 6 Vimmerby-Göteborg (266 km)
Göteborg
is Sweden's second biggest city and is often likened to San Fransisco, since this city at the West coast has plenty of bridges, hills, water, trams and seafood restaurants. Driving here through the Småland region, you will pass through forests and pass numerous lakes.
Göteborg is of course full of attractions and most of them are included in your
package. Spend the afternoon at Liseberg Fun Fair, where there is something for everyone – from breathtaking attractions to gentle carousels that give the little ones just as big a thrill.
Day 7 Göteborg
Gothenburg Museum of Art houses a unique collection of Nordic art, including
works by Carl Larsson, Bruno Liljefors, Edvard Munch, Anders Zorn and others. Take a walk through five centuries of art and see paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Picasso and Chagall. Gothenburg Museum of
Art has been awarded three stars in the Michelin Green Guide.
The Röhsska Museum of Design and Decorative Arts was given its current
appearance in 1961. The original building, clad in red, hand-made brick, was completed in 1916 when the museum was opened to the public. The Röhsska Museum of Design and Decorative Arts has over 50 000
objects in its collections, mainly old Swedish and European handicraft products. Today, the Röhsska Museum mainly collects contemporary items in the categories of handicraft, commercial handicraft and
industrial design.
How big is your world? At the Museum of World Culture, you will come face to
face with the unexpected. A true diversity of sincerity and depth, sharp design, great cuisine and experimental scene art. Square dance, trapp-rap and contemporary art. Exciting cultures and subcultures.
Five exhibitions, free guided tours and a lot more!
Nya Älvsborg Fortress is probably the best-preserved fortress in Sweden. During
the war with Denmark in 1717–1719, the fortress was besieged time after time without being occupied. Today it
is one of the most popular excursion sites in Göteborg. You take a boat to the
fortress island and this excursion, which is included in your package, also comprises a historic guided tour.
Day 8 Göteborg-Halmstad (140 km)
The medieval Fortress at Varberg
was once one of Northern Europe's strongest fortresses, but thanks to the fact that Sweden has experienced peace for 200 years, the fortress is now a very popular public attraction. The walk along the ramparts offers a magnificent view of this seaside town. Inside the walls, you will find a museuem, a café and restaurants.
If you are into shopping, you should definitely stop for some good bargains at
Sweden's biggest visitors' attraction Gekås Ullared, with more than 3 million visitors every year.
In the middle of the 19th century, wealthy Britons and Americans came to
Falkenberg
to fish for salmon. The river Ätran remains the classic salmon water of Southern Sweden and thanks to an extentensive care of the fishing, the wild salmon thrives in this region. You know what to have for lunch when you visit Falkenberg! And the sanddunes of Skrea strand are a popular stop for going swimming.
Finally, do leave the main highway and drive your last leg on the coastal road
between Falkenberg andHalmstad. A special roadsign in the form of a flower will guide you through this very characteristic coastal region. At Halmstad, the hometown of the famous group Roxette,
you will find one of the best beaches of the West coast of Sweden. Or have a stroll in the old parts of Halmstad and just enjoy the atmosphere.
Day 9 Halmstad-Lund-Malmö (135 km)
The Danish Viking-king Svend Tveskæg is thought to be the founder of Lund
. Archaeological excavations indicate that he ordered the oldest known stave church in Skåne to be built in Lund in 990 AD. After several wars, Skåne became Swedish in 1658 AD. The decision to establish
a university in Lund was taken as part of an effort to make Skåne more ”Swedish”. Lund university, still one of the most prestigeous ones in Sweden, was inaugurated in 1668 AD.
